You will need to install fuses/circuit breakers in order to protect your electrical equipment in the event of a fault. The recommended fusing for a 12V DC2DC is as follows:
Connection | Fuse size |
From Alternator/Start Battery | 70A Fuse or circuit breaker installed no more than 20cm from the source battery. |
From Solar Panels |
Fuses or circuit breakers near the solar controller input of the DC2DC. This should be rated at least 1.2 times the total array short-circuit current, for further details consult your panel specifications. |
Primary Battery connection | 60A fuse or circuit breaker on the battery end of the cable. |
Automatic reset circuit breakers should not be installed on any cabling connected to the DC2DC. These types of breakers are associated with poor performance when used with the DC2DC and because they automatically trip and reset, you might not notice if there are faults in your electrical system. In addition to providing protection for your electrical system, circuit breakers allow you to easily isolate your DC2DC from the rest of your electrical system to perform maintenance, fault finding, or for isolating your system for long term storage.
